WHY SEEK MEDICAL ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENT?

Medical Acupuncture is considered a safe, effective and generally painless treatment approach aimed at reducing and/or relieving pain and improving muscle function and activity of affected areas of the body.  Acupuncture providers at Wellington Healthcare have undergone a specialized 200-hour accredited training program in addition to their respective professional educations.  Medical Acupuncture is often used as an effective adjunct to Chiropractic, Physiotherapy and/or Registered Massage Therapy, although it can be highly effective as a stand-alone therapy for a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions.

WHAT IS MEDICAL ACUPUNCTURE?

Medical Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine, solid needles into various parts of the body in order to facilitate healing, reduce pain and nerve irritation, alleviate muscle tension, reduce swelling and to stimulate local physiological changes around the needles.  Medical Acupuncture differs from Traditional Chinese Medicine-based acupuncture in that Medical Acupuncture explains effects based on anatomical and physiological function of the neuromusculoskeletal system whereas TCM operates on the theory of regulating the body’s energy flow (Qi, or Chi) through different channels, or meridians, in the body.  Medical acupuncture is also sometimes referred to as “dry-needling.”

WHAT TYPE OF CONDITIONS DOES MEDICAL ACUPUNCTURE TREAT?

Medical Acupuncture is effective in the treatment of a wide variety of conditions that affect the musculoskeletal and nervous systems, including:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Headache
  • Muscle Tension
  • Whiplash
  • Postural syndromes
  • Strains and sprains
  • Repetitive strain injury (RSI)
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Bursitis
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Nerve entrapment syndromes
  • Tendinopathies/Tendinitis
  • Disc Injuries and radicular/nerve pain
  • Sciatica/Sciatic nerve irritation
  • Piriformis Syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Jaw Pain or Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD)
  • Tennis and Golfer’s elbow
  • Nerve Entrapment
  • Adhesive Capsulitis/Frozen Shoulder
  • Many other musculoskeletal conditions

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING AN ACUPUNCTURE VISIT/TREATMENT?

During an acupuncture treatment, needles are inserted into the skin and local tissue – muscle, tendon, ligament, fat, fascia, etc. – and left for a short time, typically 15-30 minutes.  Needles can also be manually manipulated by the practitioner or hooked up to electronic stimulation.   Acupuncture treatment is generally quite comfortable and very effective in the treatment of many neuromusculoskeletal conditions.
